Now you have been together, perhaps married, for some time and you suddenly discover how unalike you really are. Sadly, it happens every day. We see couples, who have been married some twenty plus years, decide to call it quits. In all those years together, they have grown apart, rather than closer together. Why?

I think one of the biggest causes of this growing apart is the fact that one or both stop trying to impress the other. We just get… comfortable.

Suppose your partner is no longer putting his ‘best foot forward’ now that he has grown used to being with you. Maybe he used to bring you flowers, leave you sweet notes, or just walk up behind you, wrap you in an embrace and whisper, “I love you” in a voice of sincerity.

Why do people have to grow ‘comfortable’ with each other? In some ways, it makes being together more enjoyable I suppose, but when ‘comfortable’ moves in, it seems, far to often, romance moves out. And when I say romance, I mean romantic gestures, proof of how much he cares for you. I realize I am a bit old fashioned myself, but I think that every woman, or at least quite a few, would agree with me when I say, “Keep the roses and sweet cards coming!”

And ladies, we can’t let ourselves off the hook either. Were there sweet, thoughtful things you did for him, that now ‘comfortable’ says you don’t have to do? We can’t stop showing each other how much we care!

Another major factor in this growing apart is the lack of sharing in things together. Making time to spend quality time together. Maybe you love tennis… but he loves football. If we don’t compromise, resentment might step in to the picture. If he likes football, go watch a game with him, then ask him if he will do something with you. I believe it is so important to have things in common with your partner. As individuals we are all unique! And I realize that men and women are going to differ on many things, but guys, if we go watch an action movie with you, next go around, how about you watch a chick flick with us? A relationship, a good relationship, requires balance and it demands consideration of the other person’s feelings.

One meaning for Balance is this: opposition of equal forces: a state in which two opposing forces or factors are of equal strength or importance so that they effectively cancel each other out and stability is maintained

Encarta ® World English Dictionary ©

Balance is a huge factor in all of this! If you share in the things he loves, it is only natural to expect him to participate in the things you love. Is that selfish or wrong? I don’t think so. I think that it is just as important for him to join you as it is for you to join him. While ‘absence makes the heart grow fonder’, and it is essential to have things you go and do separately, it is equally imperative that you have things you can do together. Or one fine day you may look over and see a stranger, rather than your partner, beside you!

What are some ways that you show your ‘better half’ that you care about them? Or have you slacked off? Have you gotten comfortable?

‘Let me not to the marriage of true minds admit impediments. Love is not love which alters when it alteration finds, Or bends with the remover to remove: O no; It is an ever-fixed mark, that looks on tempests and is never shaken…’ ~ William Shakespeare
